Weird problem

I'm using Gemini 2.29f - yes I know it's very old but it's worked perfectly
for many years, and I'm not asking for specific advice about Gemini but more
generally about an odd problem that's started occurring.

I fetch mail from about half a dozen mailboxes on different POP servers and
generally it works OK (I say generally because both the servers and my
internet connection have continual reliability problems).

Yesterday halfway through the day two of my accounts suddenly stopped
fetching. Every attempt threw up a "connection closed unexpectedly" error
and this went on for hours. Eventually I fired up Outlook Express in
desperation and that fetched all the outstanding mail straight away, and
immediately Gemini started working properly again.

Today exactly the same thing happened and again Outlook Express cured it in
exactly the same way.

So... can anyone think of a reason why OE would be able to unblock a problem
instantly that Gemini can't? I doubt if this is a problem with Gemini itself
- the server is on a 1&1 VPS which is a pile of shite and experience has
taught me to always blame that first.
