hiccup when download requires password

Re: hiccup when download requires password (Nick K)

one of the Archive writers put files on his website for me,
password-protected, and emailed me the link along with the required
username and password.

when i click on the link in the email, as displayed by MPro 5.13
(haven't installed 6 yet), Netsurf 2.5 fires up and then a
"site authentication" box appears where i type the username and
password. then Netsurf spends ages apparently fetching the file, then
says "Processing document" with hourglass for ages, and finally
crashes.

that was with a 5Mb file. we have tried again with smaller files, one
a zip and one a JPeg:

     http://archive.abacusline.co.uk/gerald.zip
     http://archive.abacusline.co.uk/gerald.jpg
     Username: archive
     Password: amusement

now i get a screenful of gobbledygook: the JPeg downloads as text.
repeat the exercise and now the picture appears -- as if once the
password is entered it is kept in cache or something.
ie, the problem manifests only the first time around.

i'm not exactly sure what's going on here. anybody had the same
problem? is it a MPro problem or a Netsurf problem? SOMETHING gets
confused when an emailed link involves the extra stage of giving a
password.
