downloading webmail without losing flags

Replies: Re: downloading webmail without losing flags (Jeremy Nicoll - ml MPro)

just back from nearly three weeks away, during which i was using
webmail.

i'm now trying to puzzle out how i can download all my email to MPro
without losing track of which items are flagged as "seen" (ie, "read")
and "answered". (it would be simple if this status were stored in one
of the headers on each message, but it isn't.)

i vaguely remember that on a previous occasion (2008?) i was able from
the webmail interface to search for all the "seen" (or "read") items
in my inbox and move them to a folder, then all the "answered" items
and move them to a folder, then download these folders each as two big
.mbx files. at my end, in a temporary folder in MPro, i was able to
flag all the individual items, then let them sort to my normal inbox
and other folders.

today at the Archivemag server (Gradwell) i can't see any way among
all the options given in its webmail interface (Squirrelmail 1.4.19)
to do these operations. one possibility on the Options page, however,
is "IMAP server information", which apparently would let me issue
direct IMAP commands. i don't know the language, but perhaps it would
be possible to concoct a script to do what i want?

the ISP for my personal email (UK Online) uses Horde as its webmail
interface, and Horde does let me search, move to folder and download
folder as i remember doing in 2008. but if an IMAP script *can* do
the job, it might be less rigamarole, especially given that i have
several family accounts at UK Online to deal with.

i can't be the only person who comes back from holiday and needs to
sort out webmail in this way.

has anybody found a successful recipe for doing this? maybe i'm going
at it from altogether the wrong approach. would make a useful article
for the magazine.
