Correct. You don't have to do any filtering with newsgroups apart from
subscribing to them. They get their own folders automatically - don't
try to combine them. Newsgroups are displayed in the Main Groups
window for any user as long as the user has subscribed to the group
and it contains unread messages (unless you choose to display all
messages by default).

I wouldn't recommend that. Handling newsgroups in MPro is very
straightforward. Once you've got it sorted it'll be fine.
I have a separate user for news and don't subscribe to newsgroups for
the default user. I just switch to the news user when I want to deal
with usenet and leave it to its own devices the rest of the time. That
way I'm not interrupted every time a new post comes in.
