No mail transport configured

Why do we periodically get errors from Messenger claiming that no mail
transport has been configured, requiring the application to be
restarted?   Is it some kind of startup race condition with SpamStamp,
the configured transport?

(And why has NewsHound been giving a string of authentication errors for
the last few days when trying to access Virgin's newsgroup server, when
so far as I can establish news.virginmedia.com does not and never has
required a password...?)
