font funny

I recently installed a unicode-compatible font (DejaView) so that I
could read Russian spam (not that I actually understand it) but also
to see any other funny characters that got into e-mails.
Now I commonly get an unfamiliar symbol in e-mails, a black diamond
with a white question mark on it. It isn't obvious that it replaces
any readable character - the e-mails make sense of one ignores the
diamonds. Does anyone know what they signify?
Philip.
