Problems with .doc files and emails

I'm having problems with sending Word (.doc) files attached to emails.

Files are generated on a PC (using Libre Office but I convert them to 
.doc) and transferred to my ARMiniX with LanMan98. They appear in the 
attachments box as /doc, which is as it should be, I think.

Recipients complain that they cannot open the atachments. Resending 
them converted to pdf files works, as does sending them direct from 
the PC using Thunderbird.

Has anyone else experienced this difficulty? I note that although 
there were two different recipients, both were working through the 
Open University email system, so it may arise from that. Thought the 
OU has an excellent computer helpline I fear they would know nothing 
about RISCOS.
