"From" Field corruption

When I send a message these days, I always get an error message "From 
field contains an invalid email address", and it is right, it does. I 
can correct it using the button at the right of the field, which pops 
up my email address, so really it is only a nuisance rather than a 
show stopper. Something has obviously become corrupted somehow.

I have had a good look through my !Newsdir looking for where the 
default contents of this field might come from, without finding 
anything. Can anyone suggest a way I could fix this please?
