This herring might be red, but have a look in the folder
     !Newsdir.MsgServe.Backup.mail
and do a Count on each subfolder.  The number of files in each should 
not exceed the value of "Debugmailbatches" in the file Msgserve.Config

I had a similar-ish problem a few years ago that bugged me for weeks 
until I discovered that for some reason the files in that "Backup" 
folder were never expiring.  All was well after I cleared out the 
oldest ones.
