I know nothing about linux, but I wonder if MP is the victim here?

Does your version of linux perform disk integrity checks as it starts?

Have any programs you run complained of I/O errors recently?

I'd do whatever linux requires to run disk integrity checks, then maybe
also the same for memory.

Presumably you do make backups of your data regularly?
