You can filter news if you really want to, but there's not a lot of 
point apart from blacklisting trolls.

In MPro you can password protect users but not groups. You could 
subscribe to the groups you want to protect from a user set up for the 
purpose and put a password on the login, but other users can subscribe 
to the same groups so it doesn't achieve anything.
