Bulk export/dedupe/re-import from Messenger/NewsDir?

I saw the recent tip for exporting three emails from Messenger, and it's
something I do every now and again. I want to do much the same thing, but
for rather more than three emails. I'm finding folders with large
quantities of junk data - such as a folder I set up a week ago to store
email forwards to a workmate, which has also grown several hundred Usenet
posts from 1997. They're all readable and everything, but they should never
have appeared there. There's clearly something deeply broken inside
Messenger's database. Tidying and repairing do not help.
What I would like to do is export about 100,0000 messages and Usenet
postings from about 300 folders, deduplicate them, then reimport them into a
pristine NewsDir folder. Processing time is not an issue, but I am NOT going
to sit there and do this folder by folder manually. Does anyone have any
tips? Are there any tools that can help? Do later versions of Messenger than
my old copy provide better import/export tools, such as multi-folder export?
