I wonder if you can get round this by copying Hermes out of the
internals of NetFetch, possibly with Newsbase, and putting it in the
directory with Messenger.  Hide NetFetch and don't run it.  Then fire up
Hermes each time you want to download and do what you will.

I would expect that something along these lines would do what you want. 
But you may have to read the help text to configure it properly. 
Similarly for Newsbase.

The naked Hermes has a few more options.
