splitting a large news file

Replies: Re: splitting a large news file (Richard Porter)

For reasons of my own I like to keep the contents of c.s.a.announce
(for instance) going back some years on my own harddrive rather than
relying on online archives.

Opening such a big mailbox in Messenger Pro (7.06-4) has become
unwieldy.

I'd like to split off all the threads older than, say, six months into
a separate newsbox so that I have only a small one to open for current
stuff.

Seems sensible that simplest surgery would be to:
 * rename present newsbox as c.s.a.announceD (past tense, geddit?),
 * set up a new one called c.s.a.announce,
 * move the newest threads from D to the new announcebox.
In other words, move the smaller number of threads.

Problem: how to rename the existing (say) c.s.a.apps? Click menu
over any newsgroup in Messenger's window, Rename is greyed out.
