I like the idea of making Messenger more versatile in what it allows to be
dropped on the To field, so I'm supportive of you suggestion.
With your wife's problem, however, I would have thought it would be much
easier to add the singing teachers individually to Messenger's address book,
perhaps grouping them into a folder to make it easier for her to locate them.
Then it is a simple matter of opening the menu alongside the To field and
right-clicking on each person you want to send the message to.
You can add aliases for each individual also. Then in the To field all you
would have to type would be
carol, bill, fred, james
and Messenger would expand each to the full address. I would have thought
this would be more convenient than using hand-typed text files, and you would
be able to see all the names if it was only half a dozen.
Where do you store the e-mail addresses at the moment? Is it in Organizer?
Perhaps being able to select multiple e-mail addresses from Organizer and
opening a message to them would be a good integration?

Fixing that might be good too!
