It was simply a pound sign:

Ha! When MPro displays my original message as received here, the
subject line is as quoted above. But if I use the dropdown menu
beside MPro's "Subject" field to copy it to clipboard, this is the
result:

I agree that it looks to be a problem about Unicode implementation
still being half-baked. (Is UTF-8 the same thing?)
My display font for MPro is plain traditional Homerton. I guess I
should try Unifont, but it ain't very pretty.
