I don't think that's the source of my problem. I've always had many 
more that 72 files in my mail backup directory, and the problem is of 
recent origin. I'm the only user, by the way.

I've pruned all the attachments that I can find (I always save any 
important attachments, but I've only sporadically stripped them), and 
there's no speeding up of the debatching.

I think we're back to druck's "something else", if we but knew what 
that was!
