IIRC the RISC OS version worked in that way and I agree it makes more sense.
The difference is that the RISC OS version listed threads, and under each
thread was listed the messages belonging to that thread, so the top level
sort was based on sorting threads rather than messages. Here we have only
messages (albeit organised into a tree) and the result of that is that the
sorting is done on the root message.
I'm aware that this has long been a complaint. Initially it was due to a
limitation in Qt (or in my understanding of it) although more recently I
have played around with doing something to improve this so I really ought to
resurrect that work.
