Repair groups loop

I've a feeling this has come up before but can't recall.

I selected 'Repair groups' with all groups selected. Messenger Pro went
through the process of listing each group as 'Intiating repair' through to
the last when it then looped back to the start running through again &
again. Forced quit and on restart the loop continued.

I resolved it by replacing .gemini from backup. What in .gemini is linked
to this behaviour? This time I was fortunate in that my backup was less
than an hour old in up time but it would have been nice to do a direct fix
rather than replace the lot.
