Whenever I have checked, those two numbers have been equal (72 in this 
installation: a rather arbitrary value that came with the kit and 
presumably ensures only that that number of last-received emails have 
a backup should anything go wrong in updating the database in 
MsgServe.Spool).

Yes, I read up on previous problems in this area before posting, but 
the symptom of failure to automatically send on and then delete 
messages received by Hermes in

      !NetFetch.Apps.!Hermes.MailDir.mailin.local.<account>

seemed subtly different.

I'm glad to say that, after applying Dave Symes's remedy, there's been 
no recurrence.
