Thanks Mik and Peter for the suggestions. I tried several EFF fonts, 
as is the Newtimes font, with the same result so tried Homerton which 
is a standard font and, even though I prefer the Newtimes font, it 
works.

What has really confused me is that the Newtimes font has appeared in 
the window that I'm using to compose this reply but reading the copy 
in the outbox I find that it is displayed in Homerton.
