Distribution list entries do not have to be in your address book at 
all. The two are separate.

The trick is to put all the addresses on your distribution list in 
your address book and give them aliases. Then you use the aliases in 
your distribution list. That way the real address is only in one 
place. You'll still have to edit the distribution list for additions 
and deletions of course, but if you delete the address book entry and 
leave the alias in your distribution you'll get an error message when 
you try to send to it.
