Thank you very much for your interesting reply. Looks like at least
three of us have the problem.

I have made the changes to Thunderbird that you suggested and I'll see
how it goes.

I hadn't noticed the fact that it was only for single emails but that
explains a lot. The other day I was trying to reset a password and
Netsurf wouldn't do it so I went to the laptop and there was no text.
More attempts also failed but of course I was only loading one email.

If it is OK with you I will contact Andrew quoting your diagnosis and
see if anything happens ;-)
