I have a little something to report.

After a discussion at Wakefield, Andrew Rawnsley gave me access to the
Messenger Pro sources.  I now know that the app causing the problem is
MsgServe.  I've found a remarkably simple way to speed it up, although
it needs some brave people to test it.  I've also put an hourglass in
the relevant bit (or one of the relevant bits, I don't yet know) of the
code.  I can't see any easy way to make it multi-task, but the speedup
is major.

Simple = any of you who wishes can try it by merely setting an
environment variable.  (You won't get the hourglass though; that does
require a code change.  And you can go back by unsetting the variable.
The setting is used live, i.e. you don't need to restart MPro or
MsgServe to turn the speedup on or off.)

Brave = if I'm wrong, you may lose e-mail.

So if anyone does wish to try it, please priv-mail me as dave at
davehigton dot me dot uk, try it, and tell me whether it works OK
and makes enough of an improvement to be worthwhile.
