I think I'm close to having a solution to offer.  I've been able to post
some test postings to alt.test.  I need to add a bit of code to prevent
infinite retries in the case that authentication fails, then I need to
test some more.

On that subject: I'd be grateful of offers from others to test too, from
users of eternal-september and other news servers.  I don't want to find
that my fixes make eternal-september work but break operation on other
servers!
