Newgroups file out of control!

This is a serious problem. SafeStore had appeared to grind to a halt 
whilst backing up the !NewsDir.MsgServe.Newgroups file. On investigation I 
found that the file was well over 2GB in length.

I cleared out the contents but today it's back up to 95MB and counting.

So what's feeding it and how can I stop it?
