Further fodder to my own question (nobody else responded):
I discovered today that the unusual thing here is that this group has
"Global message state" set in its group choices (Shift-E > General).
The WHY remains unanswered: WHY should stripping attachments from a
message in this group cause the message to be marked as "read"?
One other user of this copy of MPro is subscribed to this group, and
this user has NOT read the message.
I tried switching off "Global message state". This caused nearly all
the messages in the group to be marked as "unread".
Either there's a bug here or I am misunderstanding something.
